Was this a good way to handle the situation?

It would seem that he has been the recipient of poor parently skills for most of his life... but that would be a judgement without knowing the whole story.

I think that if she felt it was a last ditch effort to save her son and hopefully prevent future trouble then she did the right thing. I imagine if she had thought anything else would be effective she would have tried it or already had.

I'm not saying I disagree with you - but could it possibly be a "cop out" in that she was not the one responsible for "punishing" her child?

Let's look at the facts:

1. the boy was 12 years old
2. he is facing expulsion from school
3. he took a swing at the police officer
4. he has ADHD
5. mother wanted to show him a lesson

Based on the available information, it appears that the problems with this child started a long time ago. Apparently he has been allowed to have his own way for so long that the mother finally reached a frustration point that she thought it was appropriate to have the police come in to handle this situation. Perhaps she should have intervened at a much earlier age than 12. Perhaps a good discussion behind the spanking bush would have brought a resolution to this behavior a long time ago. Perhaps a lot of things could have been done differently than they were, but now she will have to deal with a very resentful young boy entering his teens for several years to come. This family is one that needs a lot of help and prayer.

We will sow what we reap comes to mind.

I want to add a #6 to Lee's list that I feel is very important....

#6. no mention of a father

Sounds like she is a single mom, who has to work to support herself, this kid, and maybe others.

Anyone here dealt with a kid with ADHD when you were mentally and physically exhausted? I think that she did the right thing and maybe this will help the boy to take some personal responsibilty and learn a few lessons along the way. I don't fault her... at least she did SOMETHING instead of letting him continue to run all over her and the g'ma.

My mom's co worker has been through and is in this exact situation. Her son is my brother's age, I've known them since he was 5 or so. She seems him on visiting days on Sundays now.

She is/was a terribly selfish and immature mother however, always competing with her ex-husband for their sons attention. It was one of those situations where he should have been with his dad but the mom wanted to keep him out of pride b/c she was would have looked like a bad mother if she didn't.

It's a shame how parents are allowed to mess up their kids.
