Nope- he was coming back from a failed expedition to Mt. Everest, and knew that he wasn't going to make it to the base camp. He felt that he was slowing down the others, so he told them that and then just walked away into eternity. His body was never found. Sadly, the two companions that he was with and was trying to save, froze to death in their tent, one while still holding his pencil from where he was writing in his journel.
