These are the definitions that seem appropriate to me.
My understanding of a debate is either side has an opportunity to voice their opinion and stand on a subject. Then debates end in a vote as to who expressed themselves better and "won" the debate.
If you're desire is to win people to your side then all you need is a good arguement for your case. It's looks just as pathetic on here when everyone picks at each other as it does when politicians have debates now-a-days.
If you're asking for others opinions b/c you desire to learn more about something or broaden your own view then that should not be classified as a debate and rather as a Q&A. If you don't have a stable opinion or backing on something than how can you debate it???
Whether it's deserved or not most everyone on here has earned the rep of either 1. having the attitude that they are right about everything or 2. liking to pick and stir on arguements that are not productive.
There's no reason that we can't all be educated by a good debate. But debates to have guidelines.
